1. Basic Requirements for Environmental Adaptation
Steel mills feature high temperatures, heavy dust, and large temperature fluctuations, which pose strict challenges to plastic-enclosure soft starters. Avoid installing the device within 3 meters of high-temperature equipment such as blast furnaces and rolling mills.
The ambient temperature for operation should be controlled between -10°C and 40°C. If the area exceeds 40°C, install a forced ventilation fan or heat insulation baffle around the soft starter to prevent enclosure deformation due to high temperature.
Dust-proof measures are mandatory. Although the product has basic dust resistance, it is necessary to install a dust cover with good air permeability and clean the surface and heat sink of the device at least once a week to avoid dust accumulation affecting heat dissipation.
2. Core Norms for Installation and Operation
Installation orientation must be vertical. Horizontal or inclined installation will block the natural heat dissipation channel of the plastic enclosure, leading to local overheating of internal components. Ensure there is a 15cm clearance around the device for air circulation.
Wiring must comply with specifications. Use copper cables with sufficient cross-sectional area (recommended 1.5-4mm² for low-power models) and fasten the terminals tightly. Loose connections may cause arcing, which risks melting the plastic enclosure.
Grounding is non-negotiable. Connect the dedicated grounding terminal of the soft starter to the plant’s main grounding system with a grounding resistance of no more than 4 ohms to prevent electric shock and interference.
3. Key Points for Daily Maintenance
Regular visual inspections are essential. Check the plastic enclosure for cracks, discoloration, or deformation every shift. If any of these issues are found, stop using the device immediately to avoid safety hazards.
Clean the heat sink periodically. Use a dry soft brush or compressed air (pressure ≤0.3MPa) to remove dust from the heat sink fins. Do not use water or chemical cleaning agents, as they may corrode the plastic enclosure and internal circuits.
Parameter verification should be done monthly. Confirm that the current limit, start-up time, and other parameters match the actual load of the steel mill motor. Avoid adjusting parameters arbitrarily to prevent mismatched operation.

4. Safety Guidelines for Load Matching
Do not exceed the rated load. The rated current of the soft starter should be 1.1-1.2 times the rated current of the motor. In steel mills, avoid using it for heavy-load startup scenarios such as direct rolling of thick steel slabs.
Match the load type correctly. For constant-torque loads like conveyor belts, set the start-up mode to “current limit”; for fans or pumps, use “voltage ramp” mode to reduce the impact on the plastic-enclosure device.
Avoid frequent start-stop cycles. The interval between two consecutive starts should be at least 3 minutes. Frequent startups will cause rapid temperature rise inside the device, shortening the service life of the plastic enclosure and internal components.
5. Emergency Measures for Fault Handling
When an overtemperature fault occurs (indicated by a red light), immediately cut off the power supply. Check if the heat sink is blocked or if the ambient temperature is too high. Do not restart until the device cools down to below 30°C.
If the plastic enclosure is cracked and there is a risk of electric leakage, hang a “No Operation” sign immediately. Do not touch the device with bare hands; contact professional maintenance personnel to replace the enclosure or the entire device.
